This seminar will take place at the CAC this Sunday, October 2, 2016, from 6-8 pm. Visit their Facebook Page for more information!

Excerpt from the event’s Facebook Page:

I am very happy to announce my first official seminar/talk about Middle Eastern and North African dance. The idea came from my desire to open a sharing discussion between dancers, people which would go deeper, and where they can learn more about the cultural aspects of the dance. I had the opportunity to hold a similar event at my home where I invited my dancer friends to watch a movie about North African women, and then have a discussion about the movie. The conclusion of that was just so rich, and helped everyone with their dancing. I was thinking about it, and asked myself how I could contribute to the community ? So the “The (tea) à l’orientale ” was the answer!

‘Because we like to talk around a cup of tea,
we never let the cup get empty,
so that keeps the conversation going infinitely”.
-Soumaya MaRose

My goal in creating this event, is to help the dancer and people willing to learn and understand more about the cultural aspects of Middle Eastern and North African dance. I would love to go deeper and share it in a warm atmosphere, so why don’t we do it around an oriental tea or coffee ?
The seminars will be held from time to time and are based on discussions around a topic (movies, articles, events,…) or around a guest speaker.
I am also so proud to announce my first guest artist. But first guess who said this:

”As a beginner dancer …..whenever I listened or danced to taped Oriental dance music……. this question kept coming to me……How can I one day dance to this beautiful music to a live band?”

Preregistration only, by October 1.

Arabic Jug Dance Workshop with Shadia

The Art of Jug Balancing and Dance is a very ancient tradition especially in the Near East where the pottery wheel was invented in Mesopotamia and pottery craft exploded! Women walking miles and balancing the daily food and water needs for their families began naturally dancing with them balanced on their heads! This tradition is  alive and well and will be taught by Shadia who has been performing and teaching the art of jug balance since 1980!

The workshop will start with the technique  of balancing and then move on to the wonderful folkloric movements touching on styles from the Levant, Egypt and Tunisia.

Jugs will be supplied by Shadia and may also be purchased. Wear a non slippery scarf and slipper and form fitting dance wear.

The CAC teams up with KitchenInc, Union Square’s culinary incubator, to present this cooking class series. Join us for this new cooking class and enjoy home-style authentic cooking and “My Grandma” recipes that you cannot find at any culinary school. It is a “prepare and learn” class where all participants will taste authentic food made by the cook, and then taste their own.

The session this May will focus on one of the most popular Arabic dishes, “Fatteh”: It is a famous dinner as well as breakfast meal in the Middle East! If you are a vegetarian, you will find it amazing!

The class will give great information about the cultural background of Middle Eastern cooking, followed by hands-on preparation of the recipe, and finally, eating and celebrating the sweet taste of success!
